What are B6Z files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a B6Z file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your B6Z files.

What is a B6Z file?

A .B6Z file is a B6Zip Compressed Archive file.

B6Zip Compressed Archive files are archive containers created by the B6Zip utility on macOS. These files bundle one or more files and/or folders and compress them using lossless compression. Features include an open-source design under the GPL v2 license and support for a variety of compression algorithms (default is LZMA2), enabling users to save storage space and package multiple file items together for transport or backup. The format also offers options for encryption (AES-256) and includes metadata compression and support for Unicode filenames.

B6Zip produces and works with these archives. Common tasks are creating the archive from files or extracting its contents. Because the format supports error-recovery features and file spanning, very large archives or segmented archives are possible, along with detecting corruption or recovering data.

This format begins with the byte signature 0x42 0x36 0x03 0x04 at offset 0 (ASCII "B6") as an identifying magic number.
