What are AWR files and how to open them

What is an AWR file?

An .AWR file is a CAMtastic Aperture Wizard Template file.

CAMtastic Aperture Wizard Template files store templates used by the CAMtastic Editor in Altium Designer to define how aperture definitions (sizes, shapes, etc.) are identified when importing files that lack embedded aperture data. They tell CAMtastic how to interpret text in aperture list files so that Gerber or other manufacturing artwork can be imported accurately.

These template files are created via the Aperture Wizard dialog (accessed through Tables → Aperture List Wizard in the main menus). In that tool a user enters settings such as the template name, the file extension it applies to, where in the input file aperture definitions begin and end, which units are used, and whether there may be more than one aperture definition per line. Then the user defines one or more "line formats" for recognizing different aperture shapes; each shape format must include a D-code or position tag, a shape identifier, and at least one size dimension. After the template is defined error-free it is saved to an .awr file, placed in the System\aptwiz folder of the Altium installation.

The file is plain text and begins with an ASCII header line "[APTWIZ]" followed by "Extension=…" at the very start. It includes keywords like MOVETOADDITIONAL, TOTALSHAPES, LINEFORMAT, ENDSHAPE1, EXTENSION, MULTIPLE, SEARCH1, SSVAL1, STOPAT, EDIT1, SCALE, UNITS among others.

How to open AWR files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AWR file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AWR file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
