What are AWEBPLUGIN files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an AWEBPLUGIN file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AWEBPLUGIN files.

What is an AWEBPLUGIN file?

An .AWEBPLUGIN file is an AWeb Plugin file.

AWeb Plugin files are modules used by the AWeb web browser for Amiga systems to extend its functionality, often to support additional content types such as images, character encodings, or other data formats. Plugins allow AWeb to display or process files beyond what its built-in support offers.

These plugins are created for AmigaOS (and compatible Amiga operating systems) and are loaded by AWeb at runtime when needed - for instance when the browser encounters an image format it doesn't natively decode or text in a charset it doesn't recognize. Such plugins are typically distributed within AWeb's own plugin directory, under the "AWebPlugin" folder, and work via the browser's viewers or content-type settings. For example, "awebcharset.awebplugin" handles charset conversion (like converting Unicode to ISO-8859-7) when viewing HTML content.

The browser itself writes none of these plugin files - they are developed separately by AWeb's plugin or extensions developers (often third parties) using the AWeb Plugin API. When a plugin is installed in the correct folder, AWeb can call its entry points, invoke its routines, and use it to decode or transform data as required.

Internally, these plugin files begin with a specific byte pattern: at offset zero there are the bytes 0x00-0x00-0x03-0xF3. Within the file their contents include the ASCII string "AWEBSUPPORT.LIBRARY" and the file name string ".AWEBPLUGIN", which help AWeb (or file-identification tools) recognize them as AWeb Plugin modules.
