What are AVP files and how to open them

What is an AVP file?

AntiVir Profile

These AVP files contain the configuration used by AntiVir, an antivirus application used on Windows. AVP files are text files that contain settings that control what gets scanned on the system. AntiVir Profiles are the profiles of the users that are protected. You can create shortcuts for these AntiVir profiles on your desktop to easily access them.

Important: Different programs may use files with the AVP file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AVP file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While AntiVir Profile is a popular type of AVP-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AVP file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

SimCity 4 Animation View Position

SimCity 4 Animation View Position files store information enabling the game to display 2D animated sprites correctly for different zoom levels and rotations. They are part of the animated texture system used in SimCity 4's props such as traffic lights, railroad crossings, or animated people.

Animation View Position files are created by the SimCity 4 engine (Maxis) as companion data to Animation Texture Collection (ATC) files. Each AVP file represents a "single animation viewpoint" - one combination of zoom level and rotation direction. During gameplay the ATC file references several AVP files to display the correct frame set depending on zoom and rotation. Custom content creators assemble ATC and AVP files when building animated props or models. The game reads AVP to know which part of the sprite sheet (FSH texture) to use for each frame in a particular view.

Internally an AVP file begins with a fixed byte signature (for example 0x75CDAD09 at offset zero) to identify it, and a fixed sequence of zero bytes (after a few counters) at a known offset. AVP files are referenced via the Type-Group-Instance (TGI) system in DBPF archives; the ATC file includes Type and Group IDs pointing to appropriate AVP instance files.
