What are AVF files and how to open them

What is an AVF file?

AVF files have multiple uses, and Amiga Vision Flow is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Amiga Vision Flow

These AVF files contain the multimedia presentations created in Amiga Vision, a software that allows you to create presentations using graphs, charts, motion video, and sound. How it works is you create your audio and visuals using paint, animation, or audio and text editing software. You then use Amiga Vision to prepare an icon-based outline of the flow of your presentation. Each icon represents something else on your computer screen. You then add everything together to create your multimedia presentation.

How to open AVF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AVF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AVF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

All known file formats using extension .AVF

While Amiga Vision Flow is a popular type of AVF-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AVF file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

AVF Video

AVF Video is a proprietary image sequence and video-handler format created by Her Interactive and programmer Wayne Sikes for use in several Nancy Drew adventure games. It serves to display still scenes, animated sequences, or background imagery within the game's engine, while audio is kept separate and synchronized by the game itself.

Files are produced by Her Interactive's game tools (or custom exporters) when building game assets for cinematic or interactive visuals. When a game runs, the engine reads, decrypts, decompresses, and renders each frame to present animations, slideshows, or static backdrops. Designers use AVF Video to embed visual content directly into the game's CDVideo or Video asset directories. Editing or creating AVF Video requires following its frame indexing, compression, and color-encoding structure so images display correctly.

Identification depends on a magic signature and header fields. At byte offset 0 the file always begins with the ASCII string AVF WayneSikes (null-terminated), which confirms the format.
