What are AUTOPLAY files and how to open them

What is an AUTOPLAY file?

An .AUTOPLAY file is an AutoPlay Media Studio Project file.

AutoPlay Media Studio project files store all of the configuration settings, layout design, scripting and resource links for an application created with AutoPlay Media Studio (made by Indigo Rose). These are design-time project files, saved while building a multimedia application, interactive menu, CD/DVD interface or similar, before anything is compiled or published to a runtime executable.

Each project consists of a project folder and this single "project file" that contains all user-specified settings and logic such as page layouts, object placements, event scripts, window sizes, sounds, and background settings. The project file does not usually include the image, audio, video and other media files themselves; instead it holds references (paths) to the media, which are copied into standardized subfolders inside a CD_ROOT folder under the project folder when added.

AutoPlay Media Studio itself writes these project files. When opening or continuing work, the software reads the project file and the associated media directories. When publishing, it uses the stored settings in the project file plus all referenced media to assemble the final output (for example, an executable or CD image). All versions from version 8 onward use this format. Previous versions used versioned project formats (.am6, .am7, etc.).

At a technical level the file is XML-based, starting with the ASCII declaration <?xml version="1.0" and including many specific keywords that identify it (for example CREATED WITH AUTOPLAY MEDIA STUDIO, ENABLEAUTOPLAYFEATURECDRW, NUMBER E_WINDOWHEIGHT, PROJECTINFO TOOLTIPSTYLE, USECUSTOMBACKGROUNDSETTINGS, among others).

How to open AUTOPLAY files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AUTOPLAY file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AUTOPLAY file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
