What are AUDIO files and how to open them

What is an AUDIO file?

An .AUDIO file is a Fred Editor SoundTrack file.

Fred Editor SoundTrack files hold music module data produced by the Fred Editor program for the Commodore Amiga computers. The files contain patterns, sample data, and sequencing information created within Fred Editor, a tracker-style music composition tool. These files are used as the original editable work files in the music-creation workflow, not as rendered audio tracks.

Fred Editor produces these files when composing or editing music modules. Once completed, the editable format can be played or converted by Amiga module players that support Fred Editor's format. Some players and tools listed under module formats in Amiga music archives recognize them as originating from Fred Editor.

The format is known also by other names in a few sources ("Fredmon" or "Fred Monitor") but those are misnomers; the correct module files are simply Fred Editor modules, distinguishable from "final" versions that include embedded player code.

Files of this format begin with a specific ASCII header at the start of the file: the bytes F r e d E d i t o r (46 72 65 64 45 64 69 74 6F 72 in hexadecimal) at offset zero.

How to open AUDIO files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AUDIO file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AUDIO file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
