ATOMSVC File

What are ATOMSVC files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an ATOMSVC file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your ATOMSVC files.

What is an ATOMSVC file?

An .ATOMSVC file is an Atom Service Info file.

Atom Service Info files record which data feeds a given SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) report makes available, without storing the actual report data. They are XML documents that list one or more "collections" (data feeds) corresponding to each data region in a report; each collection includes a URL that clients such as Excel's Power Pivot or Power BI can use later to retrieve the data feed.

These files are created when a user exports a paginated report from SSRS via the "Export → Data Feed" or "Save as Data Feed" option in a report portal. The resulting Atom service document (.atomsvc) is saved locally so that later it may be used to import feed data without re-exporting, for example through Power Pivot "From Data Feeds" or similar connectors.

These files do not embed report data or data values; they contain only metadata such as the names of the data regions, unique identifiers, and the URLs needed to fetch the actual data, including query parameters needed to render the report in feed format.

These files follow the Atom Publishing Protocol's "Service Document" format defined in RFC 5023, using the media type "application/atomsvc+xml". The XML begins with a declaration like <?xml version="1.0"?> and contains elements such as <service> (in the Atom "app" namespace), <workspace>, <collection href="...">, <atom:title>, etc.

The file usually starts with the UTF-8 byte order mark EF BB BF followed by "<?xml version="1.0"". It also includes keywords like COLLECTION HREF, SERVICE XMLNS, WORKSPACE, ATOM, and TITLE. The media type is application/atomsvc+xml.
