What are ASIF files and how to open them

What is an ASIF file?

An .ASIF file is an Apple IIgs Sampled Instrument file.

Apple IIGS Sampled Instrument File is a format developed by Apple in 1989 for storing whole instruments built from sampled sounds for the Apple IIGS Note Synthesizer. It defines how sampled waveforms and associated playback rules (such as envelope, pitch range, looping) are packaged so they can be used by Apple's sound hardware and compatible tools. Every instrument file distributed with Apple's Note Synthesizer uses this format, and utilities that support Note Synthesizer sampled instruments read or write using it.

These files are created and exported by tools and utilities that support the Apple IIGS Note Synthesizer. They are loaded into the system or sound tools to define playable instruments, combining waveform data and control data. Commonly each ASIF file contains one waveform data block and one or more instrument definitions that reference that waveform. These files are not generic audio samples, but full instruments: the waveform is played under rules established by the instrument definitions (e.g. velocity sensitivity, pitch limits, looping, gain, envelope shape). Once created, an instrument file can be used in music software, sound tools, or within compositions to render musical performance via the Note Synthesizer.

The format wraps all its data inside an Interchange File Format container ("EA IFF 85") with a top-level FORM chunk typed ASIF. Inside it there must be exactly one WAVE chunk holding sampled waveform data and at least one INST chunk holding instrument definitions. Optional NAME, AUTH, (c) (copyright) and ANNO (annotation) chunks may appear. Byte signatures identify the format: at offset 0 the ASCII bytes "FORM" and at offset 8 the ASCII "ASIF".

How to open ASIF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ASIF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ASIF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
