What are AREN files and how to open them

What is an AREN file?

An .AREN file is an Advanced Renamer Method file.

Advanced Renamer Method files store a re-naming preset for the Windows program Advanced Renamer. They contain a saved method list that defines how batches of files will be renamed using one or more custom "methods" (like replace, renumber, newname, list, etc). These presets let users reuse saved complex renaming operations without needing to rebuild every step each time.

These files are created by Advanced Renamer. The program writes them when a user saves a batch preset ("Method List" in the UI). Then the program reads them either later by loading the preset in the GUI or via the command-line tool arenc.exe to perform batch renaming jobs using the saved methods. Advanced Renamer interprets the file to apply its rules (active methods, order, name conflict behavior, patterns, etc).

Internally, the file is plain text. It begins with a header section (for example "[header]" and "type=preset"), contains keywords like "METHODS", "METHOD0", "METHODNAME", "SEPARATOR", "NAMECOLLISION", "PATTERN", "APPLYTO", "PRESET" and similar strings.

How to open AREN files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AREN file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AREN file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
