What are APVERSION files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an APVERSION file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your APVERSION files.

What is an APVERSION file?

An .APVERSION file is an Aperture Version Info file.

Aperture Version Info is a file generated by Apple's Aperture photo-management software to record metadata, versioning, and editing history for an image and its edited versions. It stores all the non-destructive edit records, version-names, ratings, metadata like capture date, camera model, color labels, zoom parameters and thumbnail/preview status for a photo, so Aperture can display and manage different "versions" of the same master image.

This file is created automatically inside an Aperture Library (e.g. when a new image is imported, or when a version of a master image is created). It is never intended for manual creation. The file works together with the master image file and thumbnail/preview files: during the life of the photo in Aperture, metadata and adjustment information is written into this version info file so that Aperture can reconstruct all the edits, display edits, undo, export versions, etc.

Internally the format is a binary property list ("plist") beginning with the ASCII signature "bplist00". It contains many fields such as version-number, render version, processed width and height, thumbnail or master UUIDs, flags (e.g. HASADJUSTMENTS, SHOWINLIBRARY), capture date/time components (year, month, day, hour, minute, second, day of week), color model, pixel width/height, EXIF properties, etc. These internal identifier strings help Aperture recognise and parse the file's content.
