What are AOF files and how to open them

What is an AOF file?

An .AOF file is an Artlantis Object file.

The Artlantis Object File format stores a complete 3-D object or element as it appears in an Artlantis scene, so that it can be reused in other projects. It is created with Artlantis by Abvent Group. Scene geometry, textures, materials, preview image, and rendering settings that define how that object will display are all saved inside this file.

Artlantis produces it when a user exports part of a scene as an external object. Projects load them back in: each object can be added to a new scene without rebuilding it from scratch. In versions 5 and 6 of Artlantis the format is described as "old" and used only by version 4 and earlier; newer Artlantis versions use a different object file format with extension -atlo. An Artlantis Object File can interface with the Media Converter tool to update it for newer Artlantis workflows.

The file is based on XML. It begins with the standard XML declaration (version "1.0" encoding "UTF-8") and includes elements that define geometry (<Points>, <Polygons>), materials, rendering parameters and a preview image embedded inside. Some of the internal keywords that may appear include OBJECT.DEFINITION, GLOBAL.ILLUMINATION.QUALITY, BACKGROUND.PICTURE TYPE, MODEL.ROTATION.MATRIXS, and PREVIEW.IMAGE.

How to open AOF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AOF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AOF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested two different AOF openers which you will find listed below.
