What are AN8 files and how to open them

What is an AN8 file?

An .AN8 file is an Anim8or Project file.

Anim8or project files store all the data for a 3D modeling and animation project created with Anim8or, a freeware 3D modeler and character animation tool by R. Steven Glanville. These files save everything needed to resume work: the model geometry, scenes, figures (rigs), animation keyframes, materials, textures (with paths), lights, and camera settings. They let users close the program and later load the file and continue editing where they left off.

The files are written by Anim8or itself when you save your project. They use a plain-text format, so you can open them in any text editor. The format uses nested chunks of data - named sections with identifiers, numbers, strings and punctuation - organized much like source code in C. That design allows Anim8or to skip over pieces it doesn't recognize, enabling older versions to read newer files and vice versa to an extent.

Byte-level internal markers help tools identify these files. For example, the file begins at offset zero with the ASCII text: header{ It also contains sections marked by strings like VERSION {, BUILD {, and NT {.

How to open AN8 files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AN8 file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AN8 file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
