What are AKM files and how to open them

What is an AKM file?

An .AKM file is an Aksharamala Keymap Binary file.

Aksharamala Keymap Binary files are data files used by the Aksharamala software to store compiled keymap rules that control how English or Roman keyboard input is transliterated into various Indian language scripts. They are written by Aksharamala when a user defines or selects a keymap for an Indian language; the program then uses the binary files at runtime to map typed keystrokes to the correct script characters.

The main program behind these files is Aksharamala, developed by Srinivas Annam (also called Interscape or Deshweb.com Pvt. Ltd.). Aksharamala runs on Microsoft Windows and supports multiple Indian languages. Users typically create or modify key mapping rules (for example, for Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, etc.), then Aksharamala encodes those rules into a binary file so that input can be handled quickly and consistently.

Bytes at the very start of the file serve as a signature: the first four bytes are 0x03 31 2E 34 (which in ASCII read ".1.4") at offset zero.

How to open AKM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AKM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AKM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
