AFF File
What are AFF files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an AFF file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AFF files.
What is an AFF file?
AFF files have multiple uses, and Advanced Forensic Format image is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Advanced Forensic Format image
Advanced Forensic Format is a file format used for exact disk images with or without compression. It also stores the related metadata within the disk images or separately.
AFF files divide into two layers. One is the disk-representation layer, and the other is the data storage layer. The disk-representation layer specifies segment names and represents the information on the disk image. The data storage layer uses XML or binary to store segments.
The disk image contains an exact copy of a suspect's device, which forensic experts can analyze.
How to open AFF files
Important: Different programs may use files with the AFF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AFF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested two different AFF openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .AFF
While Advanced Forensic Format image is a popular type of AFF-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .AFF file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
AGEMA File Format
AFF is short for AGEMA File Format, a file format used by thermal imaging cameras. These files have the .aff file extension.
AGEMA originally produced these cameras, but FLIR bought AGEMA in 1997. The thermal cameras produced thermal images that use the AFF file format to save the photos.
FLIR systems sell consumer smartphones that have thermal cameras. You can use these smartphones to detect water or air leaks.
Hunspell Affix File
Hunspell Dictionaries make use of an AFF file combined with a dictionary file to define the way language is being spell-checked.
The dictionary file contains words and applicable flags. The AFF file contains the data that controls how the flags manage the spell checking. You get access to a lot of optional attributes to incorporate into your spell-checking needs.
Various apps that use files with this extension
These apps are known to open certain types of AFF files. Remember, different programs may use AFF files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
