What are ADK files and how to open them

What is an ADK file?

An .ADK file is an AngryDuck Encrypted file.

AngryDuck Encrypted is a ransomware-created file format applied by the Angry Duck malware. The malware encrypts ordinary user documents, media and other files on Windows computers, rendering them unusable until a ransom is paid for a decryption key. Infected files are renamed by appending the ".adk" extension.

When Angry Duck runs, it inserts a visible marker inside encrypted files. The marker is the ASCII text "*THIS FILE HAS BEEN ENCRYPTED BY ANGRYDUCK*" at the start of file contents. Technical analysis shows that instead of encrypting entire files, it often only modifies or corrupts file headers, and then renames the files with .adk, preventing them from being opened normally.

How to open ADK files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ADK file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ADK file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
