What are ABEX files and how to open them

What is an ABEX file?

An .ABEX file is an Enhanced Android Backup file.

Enhanced Android Backup files (.abex) store backups of Android device data with additional security tied to the identity of the device that created them. These files are written by the Windows application called Droid Explorer using its Device Backup feature. Their purpose is not just to save app and system data like a regular Android backup, but also to include a header that binds the backup file to a specific Android device. That binding means the backup can only be restored onto the exact device that produced it.

When Droid Explorer makes an ABEX backup, it creates a special header at the start of the file. This header includes the text "ENHANCED ANDROID BACKUP", followed by the device identifier, the version number of Droid Explorer, and the version of the ABEX format. After this header section, the file continues with the usual backup archive content, similar to standard Android backup files. Restoring requires using Droid Explorer and reconnecting the original device that created the backup.

The file begins with a fixed byte signature at offset 0: the ASCII text "ENHANCEDANDROIDBACKUP".

How to open ABEX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ABEX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ABEX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
