A4R File
What are A4R files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an A4R file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your A4R files.
What is an A4R file?
An .A4R file is an Authorware Packaged file.
Authorware Packaged File (extension .A4R, also .A5R or .A6R) is a compiled course or presentation file produced by Adobe Authorware. It contains the complete multimedia experience - graphics, audio, text, programmed interaction, and branching logic - all packaged with the runtime so that users can run the content without having Authorware installed.
This format is created when a developer using Adobe Authorware (formerly Macromedia Authorware) publishes a project for distribution using a "package with runtime" option. The output is meant to be executable on supported platforms, enabling learners or users to view interactive courseware directly, rather than providing editable source materials. It is typically used for training modules, multimedia presentations, or e-learning content that must run as a standalone package.
Files of this format begin with a specific byte signature: the ASCII letters "PCRS" (hex 50 43 52 53), followed by bytes AF BC AD AC at the start of the file. That signature uniquely identifies Authorware Packaged File (with runtime) among other formats.
