A3W File

What are A3W files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an A3W file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your A3W files.

What is an A3W file?

An .A3W file is an Unpackaged Authorware 3 For Windows file.

Unpackaged Authorware 3 for Windows files are data files created by the authoring software Authorware 3 (originally by Macromedia, later Adobe) during the development of interactive multimedia content. These .A3W files represent the editable, "unpackaged" version of a Windows-targeted project. They store all resources (such as icons, media, scripts) and the flowline logic in a form that allows further editing.

Such a file must be edited or packaged using the original Authorware tools before distribution. Once finalized - for example, compiled or packaged - it is often converted into a format that includes a runtime or deployment package, no longer retaining its editable structure. As long as the file remains unpackaged, its internal structure allows changes to content, media links, and logic.

The format is binary and begins with the signature bytes at offset zero: 57 43 52 53 A8 BC AD AC (ASCII "WCRS…" followed by non-printables). It also contains strings such as "PIG'WIN'001", "SYSTEM", and "RETURN" within its data.
