The ._xls file extension is used for temporary spreadsheet files in the XLS file format. These _XLS files are also known as Microsoft Excel temporary files. Some Webmail providers and email client programs convert .xls spreadsheet attachments into ._xls files, in order to protect users against possibly malicious macros stored in the attached XLS spreadsheet files. These _XLS files may contain Microsoft Excel data like financial and accounting details, text and other multimedia objects. However, Microsoft Excel cannot open and view the content of these .xls files, unless the underscore () is deleted from the file extension. For example, 1._xls should be changed to 1.xls in order for Microsoft Excel to be capable of opening and editing these spreadsheets. Once this has been done, all versions of Microsoft Excel can be used to open and edit these spreadsheets. Microsoft Excel versions are available in Windows PCs, Mac OS X computers, Android devices and iOS mobile gadgets.
