What is a 94B file?

A .94B file is a 94B Sound Bank file.

The 94B Sound Bank (extension .94B) is a proprietary sound bank format used by Guillemot MaxiSound series audio boards for storing wavetable instrument data. It is used to provide custom GM/GS‐style sample sets ("soundfonts") which the Dream SAM9407 processor on these cards loads into its sample RAM so that MIDI and wavetable audio playback use those sounds instead of the built-in ROM bank. The MaxiSound Home Studio (MaxiSound 64) line supports loading .94B banks into RAM expansion (SIMMs) to replace or supplement the default ROM sound bank.

Files in .94B format are created by the MaxiSound utilities supplied by Guillemot (or Hercules), such as the "Maxi Sound 64 Utilities," which allow converting DLS v1 sound files to .94B. Once created, those banks are loaded into the card using the "94DINIT" initialization program in DOS (or its equivalent in Windows) that tells the Dream chip to replace its sound bank in RAM. Standard ROM sound banks shipped with the card cannot be overwritten unless sufficient RAM is installed.

Technical identifiers of the .94B format include a file signature of the ASCII bytes "PRIO" at file offset 0x00, followed by "..IMAP" at offset 16. Internally the format contains chunks or tags labelled "IMAP", "PARA", "RLOC", and "SAMP", which correspond to mappings, parameters, region locations, and sample data respectively.

Important: Different programs may use files with the 94B file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your 94B file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
