What is a 4XM file?

A .4XM file is a 4X Movie Video file.

4X Movie Video (.4XM) files store full motion video and audio used in cutscenes or multimedia sequences inside computer and console games. These files are created by the 4X Technologies "4X Movie" system and are most often found in legacy titles such as Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare, Britney's Dance Beat, or The Messenger, where disk space and playback efficiency were major constraints.

These files combine compressed video and interleaved audio in one container. Video is encoded with the proprietary 4XM Video codec; audio may be uncompressed PCM or use 4X's variant of IMA ADPCM, and multiple language tracks are supported. Passage through 4XM files involves demuxing tracks for playback - game engines or multimedia tools like FFmpeg perform decoding, then render video frames and audio together.

Internally the format uses a RIFF-style structure. It starts with a RIFF header including the tag "4XMV", followed by LIST chunks such as HEAD, TRK_, and MOVI, which in turn contain subchunks defining video and audio track formats (vtrk, strk) plus frame data (ifrm, pfrm, cfrm). Little-endian byte order is used throughout.
