What is a 3WD file?

A .3WD file is a 3D Construction Kit World Data file.

3D Construction Kit World Data (.3WD) files are used by the 1991 utility 3D Construction Kit (also known as Freescape Virtual Reality Studio) made by Incentive Software. They store the layout and design of a user-created 3D world, including the placement of objects, zones, walking/flying paths, and interactive elements. These worlds can be explored or run after being built.

A .3WD file is created and saved when a user designs a world inside the 3D Construction Kit editor. The program allows building primitives (cubes, pyramids, cuboids), applying colours, defining areas, sensors and conditions (via Freescape Command Language), then exporting or compiling the virtual world so it can be navigated or used as a game environment.

Files of this format typically begin with a byte signature at offset 0 of bytes 0x43 0x50 (ASCII "CP"), which identify them as 3D Construction Kit World Data.

How to open 3WD files

Important: Different programs may use files with the 3WD file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your 3WD file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
