What is a 3DMLW file?

A .3DMLW file is a 3D Markup Language For Web Model file.

A 3DMLW file is a plain text file written in XML (version 1.0) that describes both two-dimensional (2D) and interactive three-dimensional (3D) scenes for display on the web. It was created by 3D Technologies R&D for the 3DMLW platform, which includes a browser plug-in and tools for producing and viewing dynamic web-based 3D/2D content. The format lets creators define objects, textures, cameras, lighting, ground planes, and interactive behaviors (via scripting) in a single document that can be embedded in or linked like an HTML page.

Files with this extension are generated using authoring tools that support the 3DMLW language. The usual workflow is: a user writes or exports a .3dmlw document in XML, specifies 2D overlays and 3D elements (such as 3D models from .obj, .3ds, .an8 or .blend formats), assigns textures (e.g. .png, .jpg, .tga), embeds or references a camera, ground plane, and other objects, optionally adds Lua scripting for interactivity, then views the result by loading it through the 3DMLW plug-in or standalone viewer using OpenGL for rendering.

The file begins with an XML declaration like <?xml version='1.0' standalone='no'?>, followed by a root <document> element containing child elements such as <content2d> and <content3d>. Within those appear tags like <camera id='…' …/>, <box … />, <area … />, <script type='text/x-lua'>…</script>, and attributes like NAME, CLASS, COLOR, WIDTH, HEIGHT, DEPTH, and references to texture files (e.g. .PNG).

How to open 3DMLW files

Important: Different programs may use files with the 3DMLW file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your 3DMLW file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
