What is a 3DFONT file?

A .3DFONT file is a Wildfire 3D Font file.

Wildfire 3D Font files are custom 3D typeface resources designed specifically for use with the Wildfire graphics or multimedia system. These files store full 3-dimensional models of individual characters, allowing text to appear in three dimensions in Wildfire productions (titles, animations, overlays), rather than just flat 2D outlines. Wildfire software generates .3DFONT files when a designer creates or imports 3D lettering, either for rendering in scene elements or for animated graphical effects.

These .3DFONT files are created and maintained by Wildfire tools; Wildfire reads them when assembling any component that needs 3D text. Typically users will load a .3DFONT as part of their project, assign it to text objects, and Wildfire uses it to draw or animate characters in three dimensions. Designers don't usually edit .3DFONT by hand; instead they use Wildfire's font creation or import tools (which turn vector or model data into the .3DFONT format), and the software handles rendering, depth, shading, lighting etc.

Files in this format begin with a signature at the very start: the ASCII sequence WFFONT0 appears at byte offset zero. That header uniquely identifies the file as a Wildfire 3D Font.

How to open 3DFONT files

Important: Different programs may use files with the 3DFONT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your 3DFONT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
