What are 3DEMON files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a 3DEMON file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your 3DEMON files.

What is a 3DEMON file?

A .3DEMON file is a 3-Demon Project file.

The 3-Demon Project format (extension .3DEMON) is the native file type used by the Amiga program called 3-Demon, a 3-D object editor created by the software house Mimetics in the late 1980s. This format stores complete information about 3-D models: their geometry, surfaces (including properties like color, transparency, reflection etc.), object hierarchy (parents, children), and transformations such as scaling, rotation, movement. When you learn the program's interface and "what you see is what you get" modelling approach, .3DEMON files are the work files in which the user builds models that can later be exported or converted.

The program writes .3DEMON files when the user saves their 3-Demon scene. Those files are read later by 3-Demon in order to reload the scene for further editing, conversion or export into other supported 3-D object formats (including, at that time, the formats used by Sculpt3D, VideoScape 3D, Forms in Flight, Silver etc.).

Technical detail: files begin with the ASCII signature "SCNE" at byte offset 0, then contain internal keywords such as "ASURF", "OBJT" and "TRAN", which stand for surface definitions, object records and transformation data respectively.
