What are 3D2 files and how to open them

What is a 3D2 file?

A .3D2 file is a Cyber Studio CAD-3D V2 Object file.

Cyber Studio CAD-3D V2 Object files are the native 3D object storage format used by the Atari ST software CAD-3D version 2.0 (part of the Cyber Studio suite by Tom Hudson / Antic Software). They hold complete 3-dimensional models including their shape (vertices, faces), object grouping, and also scene metadata like lighting and palette information. These files are used when building models, saving them, then later rendering or animating them.

A .3D2 file is produced by CAD-3D 2.0 when you save one or more 3-D objects you have designed; the software later reads, manipulates or renders them (for example with RezRender, Cyber Control, or Cyber Paint) to produce animations or images. Objects created in the earlier CAD-3D 1.0 format (extension .3D) can often be converted into .3D2 format to take advantage of version 2.0 features.

Files begin with a 256-byte header that identifies it as a CAD-3D 2.0 object file and includes data such as the number of objects contained (up to 40), settings for three light sources (on/off, brightness, positions), ambient light, and a color palette; the body contains, for each object, lists of vertices and faces, with each coordinate stored as a two-byte word instead of a floating-point value. The file's signature word in bytes 0-1 is $3D02.

How to open 3D2 files

Important: Different programs may use files with the 3D2 file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your 3D2 file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
