What are 3AD files and how to open them

What is a 3AD file?

A .3AD file is a 3D Construction Kit 2 Area file.

The 3D Construction Kit 2 Area file keeps data defining one "area" or zone within a virtual 3D world made using the 3D Construction Kit 2, a world-editing/game-creation tool built around the Freescape engine. It stores the geometry, objects, triggers or conditions, and layout information that apply only in that area, so that the full world can be assembled from multiple such area files.

It is written by the 3D Construction Kit 2 program when a designer builds or edits an area within a world creation project. The user edits terrain, places objects, sets conditions or events, and then saves that area into a .3AD file. That .3AD file can later be loaded back into the editor, or used as part of a compiled standalone world/game.

Each .3AD file begins with an ASCII header string at the very start: "An AREA file created with 3d Construction Kit 2" (bytes 0x41-0x6E etc.)

How to open 3AD files

Important: Different programs may use files with the 3AD file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your 3AD file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
