What are 2MG files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a 2MG file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your 2MG files.

What is a 2MG file?

A .2MG file is a 2IMG Universal Format Disk Image (Apple II) file.

2IMG Universal Format Disk Image is a file format designed to store complete disk images from Apple II systems together with metadata about the image. It serves as a wrapper for high-level disk image data - typically block images such as DOS-order or ProDOS-order, or nibble images - and is used by emulators and Apple II users to preserve disk contents plus useful identifying information.

Files of this format are created by utilities such as ASIMOV, ImgUt, DSK2FILE, AppleWin, and other Apple II emulator tools; these programs can also read .2MG/.2IMG to present the disk image to emulated or physical Apple II hardware. The format supports writing an entire disk image as a block image or as a nibble image, and adds metadata fields including flags for write-protection, the DOS 3.3 volume number, and creator signature.

Files begin with the ASCII signature 2IMG at offset zero, followed by a structured header (header size, version, ImageFormat specifying DOS order / ProDOS order / nibble format, flags including VolumeNumber and Locked status, number of 512-byte blocks if applicable, offsets and lengths for the disk image data, optional comment, optional creator data).
