What are MPG files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a MPG file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your MPG files.

What is a MPG file?

A .MPG file is a MPEG Video file.

MPG (also referred to as MPEG) is the acronym for Moving Picture Experts Group - the same group that also invented the popular MP3 and MP4 formats. Files with the .mpg extension are video files, and it is a popular format to distribute video and movie clips over the Internet.

Videos stored as .mpg files are compressed, which means the data has been reduced in size. The files are compressed to allow users to download the files more quickly without sacrificing much of the picture quality in the video itself.

The MPG video file format uses either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 compression. MPEG-1 results in lower quality than MPEG-2, and was designed to compress VHS-video and CD audio without losing too much quality.

MPEG-2 was designed to compress video and audio for higher-quality videos and has been used as the compression method for TV broadcasts and DVDs.
