What are META files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a META file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your META files.

What is a META file?

META files have multiple uses, and RealPlayer Metadata is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

RealPlayer Metadata File

The RealNetworks' RealPlayer application generates files that contain the .meta file extension. The application uses these META files to store metadata for a corresponding video file and is used by the RealPlayer program to describe a video file.

The META file usually contains information about the corresponding video file, including the file's duration, the name of the file, and a short description of the file. However, it doesn't contain any actual video data. This file allows your computer to locate the video associated with the META file when you try to play it.
