What are IMG files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an IMG file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your IMG files.

What is an IMG file?

IMG files have multiple uses, and Disk Image is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Disk Image File

When an IMG file contains an image of a floppy disk/CD/DVD, the file can be used to play the disk media on your computer without the need for a physical copy of the disk, much like an ISO file. For example, an IMG file may allow you to play a gaming application on your computer without having the actual gaming disk in your DVD drive while you are playing.
