What is Zone.com?
Zone.com, or more properly known as MSN Games, is part of the MSN Portal (MSN stands for Microsoft Network) and is a casual and online gaming site that offers downloads of games and games that can be played right on the browser. Similar to the offerings by Oberon Media, Big Fish Games, and Wild Tangent, MSN Games offers games in three types of purchase model – fully free (which can be downloaded, installed, or played without any charge, and may be supported by ads), trial games (which can be played for free within a limited time, and must be purchased to be played after that), and pay-to-play versions (games that need to be purchased fully before download or installation). Many of the games featured in Zone.com can also be played in a smartphone, but access to these games (and MSN in general) requires an active Windows Live Messenger account.
Zone.com was first launched as the Internet Gaming Zone in 1996, after Microsoft acquired it and its developers, who were then independent. Initially, it only featured a few games that had become staple in later releases of Windows, such as Hearts and Backgammon, but later as it solidified its hold on the market featured popular retail games, such as Age of Empires.
