Windows Virtual PC

If you are looking for Windows Virtual PC, you have come to the right place. We explain what Windows Virtual PC is and point you to the official download.

What is Windows Virtual PC?

The Microsoft Windows Virtual PC is a virtualization application exclusively for the Microsoft Windows family. It replaces the Microsoft Virtual PC, which is in itself based on the Connectix Virtual PC). Although there was initial support for the Mac, it has been effectively discontinued, and Linux support remains questionable (and not officially supported). Today, the Windows Virtual PC is free software. It does not work on earlier Windows versions, only working on Windows 7 and later, and does not support the virtualization of programs for operating systems older than Windows XP Professional SP3. There are, however, older versions of the Virtual PC available for download, should one choose to emulate older programs or devices.

As a virtualization application, the Windows Virtual PC emulates, or "virtualizes," a PC and its associated hardware, which is useful for running a program that would otherwise not run (or run, but with several errors) on newer operating systems, such as Windows 7. The Windows XP Mode is part of the Virtual PC suite, a component that contains a full and licensed copy of Windows XP Professional that runs inside a virtual machine environment for Windows 7.
