What is Sysinternals Procmon?

Process Monitor is a monitoring tool for Windows. This program shows file systems in real time, as well as process/thread activity and Registry. It mixes the features of two legacy Sysinternals utilities, Regmon and Filemon. It contains a broad list of enhancements including non-destructive and rich filtering, comprehensive event properties such as session IDs and usernames, and full thread stacks and reliable process information. Also included is the integrated symbol support for every operation, and simultaneous logging to a file.

Its features make this program a core utility in users’ system malware hunting and troubleshooting toolkit. Process Monitor contains some filtering and monitoring abilities. This includes more gathered data for operation input, and parameters for output. Non-destructive filters allow users to set filters without having to lose data. Capturing thread stacks for every operation and makes it easy in several cases to identify the root cause of an operation. There is also a dependable capture of process details, including image paths, session or user IDs, and command lines. Moveable and configurable columns are available for any event property. Filters can be arranged for any data filed including those not configured as columns. An advanced logging architecture feature scales captured events and gigabytes of log data.
