What is StarCraft II?
Starcraft II is the direct sequel of Blizzard Entertainment's wildly popular real-time strategy game, Starcraft, which was originally released on 1998. First announced on 2007 at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational at Korea, it was released worldwide on July 2010 and has since received critical acclaim both from critics and players, and has replaced South Korea's popular online pasttime (which in the past has been Starcraft, Starcraft II's predecessor). It has garnered about an aggregated score of 93% from Metacritic, and though it has generally received favorable and positive reviews, critics cite its failings as well, including the lack of LAN support. At the time of its release, Starcraft II set a world record as the fastest-selling real-time strategy game of all time.
What is known as Starcraft II is actually the core game, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, which focuses on the Terran campaign. The other two races will be treated in the upcoming expansions, Heart of the Swarm (focusing on the Zerg) and Legacy of the Void (focusing on the Protoss). Set 4 years after the events Starcraft: Brood War, Starcraft II has updated Starcraft's graphics but used the same mechanics, and added new units, tweaked existing ones, and removed others, and lets players visit old and new locations alike.
