Spybot Search & Destroy (S&D) is a very popular anti-spyware program developed by a German engineer, Kolla, distributed through the Ireland-based Safer Networking company. The Spybot Search & Destroy program sounds very Terminator-like, and this is because one of the superficial inspirations of the program, which is intended to sweep the computer’s hard disk and random access memory (RAM) from infection and thoroughly eliminate then from the system, if any are found. This program has been compatible with Windows operating systems since Windows 95 and has enjoyed tremendous popularity with users worldwide with its ease of use and very simple graphic user interface (GUI).
Primarily meant to defend against and remove spyware and adware, Spybot Search & Destroy has a host of other capabilities, which is meant to restore critical system files and services in the aftermath of a spyware or malware attacks. This includes the ability to repair and clean the Windows registry, the repair of Winsock LSPs, ActiveX, and browser settings, and remove such seemingly innocuous pieces of software such as unwarranted browser helper objects (BHOs) that masquerade as a browser plugin or toolbar but are just, in fact, adware, spyware, or something worse.
