What is Sid Meier's Colonization?

Sid Meier's Colonization is a strategy computer game developed by MicroPros. This game was founded by Brian Reynolds and Sid Meier. Sid was the first to conceptualize the flow of the game, which is why the title was taken from his name. The game was first developed for DOS OS in 1994 and was later further developed to provide support for other operating systems such as, Windows, Amiga and Mac OS.

Sid Meier's colonization runs on a single player mode. It is a strategy game where the player must come up with a plan so his civilization can win against other rival civilizations, which are controlled by the computer. The theme of the game was inspired by the European colonization from the timeline of 1492, wherein the player will choose from different nations such as Spain, Netherlands and France. Other nations will be controlled by the AI computer. Each nation has its unique abilities and strengths which gives either advantage or disadvantages.

There are two maps available in Sid Meier's Colonization. These are American map and New World map. On American Map, the player can start with two ships travelling towards the Indian country. Thus, the civilization started in India. On the other hand with the New World map, player can choose from different stories and features.

The player can go to a certain nation, collect and trade goods to this colony and afterwards, go back to Europe and gather more colonists. The player is required to make the new civilization productive. Thus, they must collect goods, food, harvest stocks and make the economy grow.

There are 3 basic units of Sid Meier's Colonization, resource gatherers, resource manufacturers and artillery units. Resources manufacturers provide goods and supplies to sustain the productivity of the nation. The resource gatherers on the other hand, keep distributes and trades the goods to the other allied nations. Money that will be earned from trading can be used to build more buildings and infrastructures such as training centers, schools, universities and government centers.

The civilian is basically the worker or the commoner in the nation. They may start as people with no skills. These skills can be taken from schools and universities. For education is one of the basic need and factor in a nation. Apart from this, the player is also required to provide security for the nation against rivals. These are the soldiers, gatekeepers and Jesuits. When the civilians are not given a task or skills in a period of time, they will turn into criminals. These criminals may compromise the productivity of the nation. They may also affect the economy of the nation. This is one of the purpose why soldiers are brought into the game. They must seize criminals.

Criminals can be given a chance to reform. They will turn back to civilians without skills. If they had skills way before they became criminals, these skills will be lost and they will start again. Indian tribe does not train criminals to become soldiers. They must be back to a civilian first in a period of time before they will be accepted by the Indians.

The player can acquire ships such as Galleon, Merchantmen, Frigate, Caravel and Privateer which plays different functions in the colony. Some ships are sent to battle while some are sent for trading and transporting goods. The player must also be attentive with political relationships between Indians and the Colony. This gives strength and power towards the allied nation. They can also provide peacemakers that may hold useful in maintaining relationships.

The Sid Meier's Colonization promotes the political and economic notion for players. It also highlights the decision making in managing colonies for productivity and growth. Some rules and restrictions are implemented for buildings, infrastructures and even for the civilians. The concept of the game is basically taken from the real world events and laws implemented, giving the player a feel of a ruler and a commander. It also builds a concept of abiding those restrictions for the nation. The player must consider relationships between civilians, soldiers and lawmakers. Religion is also a big factor for each civilization. The game has 3 different difficulty levels, easy, medium and hard. As the difficulty escalates, the restrictions and rules are also increased gradually. The game ends if a certain nation declares independence against any colonial takeover.
