SecuROM is software for optical disc copy protection and a Digital Rights Management system from Sony DADC. The software enables software developers to protect their content from being copied and distributed illegally, by providing the user with a tool for adding a digital signature to the disc.
The executable file included in the manufactured is linked to the signature. If the executable is derived from a copied source, the computer where the executable was attempting to launch will detect the file as an illegal copy, and will not execute.
SecuROM requires online product activation before it the user can benefit from its encryption and authentication features. SecuROM is utilized by software developers, including developers of software games. If an illegal copy of a game that has been signed by SecuROM is inserted on a disc drive, the game will fail to launch. In like manner, any other software that has been signed through SecuROM is pirated and the pirated copy is inserted in the local disc drive, the software program will not load.
