What is Personal Ancestral File?

Personal Ancestral File is a free family history and genealogy software for your desktop. It is provided by FamilySearch that is run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It lets you collect, share and organize your information about your family and roots. You will discover about your ancestors and view records of famous personalities. Choose your family tree chart. It will let you record your direct ancestors. They are easy to download for you to fill in, work with and print.

You enter names, citations, dates and data sources into a database, and then to organize and search them, print charts and forms, and share the files in GEDCOM format. PAF supports Unicode. It can link images and other multimedia to individual records. The Ancestral File Number or AFN identifies each individual record in Ancestral File format, although multiple AFNs have been given to several individuals that makes it confusing for research. An AFN has 4 capital letters or numbers, a dash and 2 or 3 more digits or capital letters. It does not contain vowels as a representation of sequence integers in base 30, except last digit that is used as checksum. It is replaced by Personal Identifier in the new database of FamilySearch. The AFN is not shown when viewing on the new database.
