What is osu?

Osu, generally written as osu!, is a free software game that is based on the rhythm action or rhythm game concept. The objective of the game is to hit specific objects that will randomly appear when the game is active. The objects are known as hit circles, spinners and sliders. These will appear in rhythm with the song being played in a specific level of the game.

Each game consists of beatmaps, or sometimes also called maps, which are the levels of the game. When the game starts, a Japanese song will play and the objects will appear. Basically, the player must hit as many hit circles, spinners and sliders per game level to keep the health bar at a steady level. When the health bar reaches 0 before the song ends, the player cannot progress to the next level.

The player must use a pointer, usually a mouse, to tap the objects before they disappear. The most crucial object is the hit circle because the player has to hit this object at just the right time; generally, in keeping with the tempo of the song. Points are earned when the objects are hit.
