OpenVPN

If you are looking for OpenVPN, you have come to the right place. We explain what OpenVPN is and point you to the official download.

What is OpenVPN?

OpenVPN is an open-source software application that implements virtual private network techniques for creating secure point-to-point or site-to-site connections in routed or bridged configurations and remote access facilities. It also uses a custom security protocol that utilizes SSL/TLS for key exchange. It is also capable of traversing network address translators, and firewalls. This was written by James Yonan, and is published under the GNU General Public License. OpenVPN allows peers to authenticate each other by using a pre-shared secret key, certificates, or usernames and passwords. When used in a multi-client server configuration, it allows the server to release an authentication certificate for every client, by using signature and Certificate authority. It also uses the OpenSSL encryption library extensively, as well as the SSLv3 and TLSv1 protocol. It also contains many security and control features.

OpenVPN is good at portability. OpenVPN has been ported and embedded in several systems. For example, DD-WRT has the OpenVPN server function. SoftEther VPN, a multi-protocol VPN server, has the implementation of OpenVPN protocol. OpenVPN is a robust and highly flexible tunneling application that uses all of the encryption, authentication, and certification features of the OpenSSL library to securely tunnel IP networks over a single TCP and UDP port.
