What is OpenNI?
OpenNI (Open Natural Interactions) is an industry-led non-profit organization. It was formed for the purpose of certifying and improving the interoperability of natural user interfaces and organic user interface for interactive devices. The Natural Interaction Devices or Natural Interfaces are a set of devices that capture body movements and sounds for the purpose of creating more natural interactions between users and computers; this in the context of Natural user interfaces. Two of such devices are Kinect and Wavi X-tion. The OpenNI was first formed in November 2010 with PrimeSense as one of its main members. PrimeSense developed Kinect, an input device utilized in Microsoft’s Xbox 360 video gaming console. Other Pioneer members include Willow Garage, and ASUS; Middleware partners include FORTH ICS, University of Southern California, Ayotle, and SigmaRD.
The OpenNI Framework is a source of open source APIs that OpenNI provides. The APIs are used as a standard for applications to access natural interaction devices. The API framework is also called OpenNI SDK. The main features of the OpenNI Framework are as follows: voice and voice command recognition; hand gestures; and body motion tracking.
