Morpheus

If you are looking for Morpheus, you have come to the right place. We explain what Morpheus is and point you to the official download.

What is Morpheus?

Morpheus was a P2P client for file-sharing—specifically music file sharing—online that was eventually shut down after a series of lawsuits and legal quibbles that involved both its competitors in P2P as well as traditional P2P network opponents, the film and music industries. Using the program, people could search the network for files being shared by others that they wanted to save, e.g. music tracks they wanted to have in their libraries, films they wanted to see, and the likes. They could also share files in the same manner, offering them for download via peer to peer technology to other users.

The Morpheus program came out in the wake of predecessor Napster’s fall and filled the gap that the then-dying Napster left in file sharing online. It originally made use of Kazaa BV’s technology and, like Kazaa and Grokster, relied on the FastTrack protocol initially for its pool of shared files. When the first round of legal issues hit owner company StreamCast, however, it switched temporarily to competitor Gnutella’s technology and network. Even so, this could not save the company from its legal troubles and StreamCast as well as Morpheus eventually closed down. Copies of the program remain accessible on the Web.
