MapWindow GIS

If you are looking for MapWindow GIS, you have come to the right place. We explain what MapWindow GIS is and point you to the official download.

What is MapWindow GIS?

MapWindow GIS is an open-source geographic information system that users can program to serve their precise cartographic needs. The program is open source and was originally developed by researchers who required their map viewing software to do more than let them view topographic/hydrological data. In other words, they needed a user-programmable, highly adaptable, and interactive mapping application. The MapWindow GIS project is thus focused on creating a program that continues to support user control and modification of the map data, and which is easily extensible for users with coding knowledge.

Users can easily customize their version of MapWindow to suit their precise data needs. Even those without programming experience can alter the program to meet their requirements by working with the program’s configuration file. Predesigned plug-ins may be combined as modifying extensions as well to bring the program closer to what the user needs. Users can also build their own shapefiles using the ActiveX control of the software or by using the plug-in for developers.

As it is an open-source, license-free program, there is no need to pay for the privilege of using MapWindow GIS.
