What is InstantMusic?
InstantMusic is a music software which allows the user to create variations on songs played through the software. This software comes with a several built-in songs for several genres and creates variations through playing a song and then using the mouse and moving it up and down. These variations are created in the current tones while making sure also that no variation will result to un-harmonic tunes.
It was released by the company Electronic Arts of EA in 1986 and was developed by Robert Campbell. Its prototype was initially created on the Commodore 64 and was later added to EA’s product listing before the Amiga platform was released. Over the years it has won many awards including AmigaWorld’s Editor’s Choice Award and was praised for the ability to let even non-musicians to create music.
Also in 1986, a columnist for Byte magazine, named Bruce Webster called it “an outstanding program” and handpicked the InstantMusic software as product of the month. He called the InstantMusic software “an intelligent electronic instrument” which lets even the non-musically adept users to create real music effortlessly, although its disk copy protection is one feature that Webster criticized.
