What is gmax?
Gmax is a 3D modeller that can also produce 3D animation, specifically for use in games. Particular game developers released packs that expanded the functions of the software and made it ready for use as a 3D modeller for game-ready content in certain releases. Examples of games for which packs and rendering engines were released that could work with Gmax include SimCity 4 and the Trains Railroad Simulator games. One of the most popular games of all time, Quake 3, also supported Gmax models and custom animation. This allowed hobbyist modellers to generate professional-looking and game-ready models with quality tools that had previously been available only to professional game studios and developers.
Gmax was based on 3DSMax from Autodesk. While the latter is still available, Gmax has actually already been discontinued. It should be noted too, for those that are familiar with 3DSMax, that Gmax is a much more limited program in terms of features and functionality. That having been said, it can still be found online for free. It can generate characters, vehicle models, world objects in a game, and even full game landscapes.
