FreeCAD

If you are looking for FreeCAD, you have come to the right place. We explain what FreeCAD is and point you to the official download.

What is FreeCAD?

FreeCAD is a zero-cost parametric modeler licensed with the GNU Public License. Parametric modeling or parametric graphics editing translates to a type of graphic design process that is dependent on specified properties (the parameters of the design, that is). With FreeCAD, a user can create entirely parametric graphical representations in either a 3D or 2D space, and is also able to modify said representations later on by simply altering the specifications for a certain parameter. Given this function, it shall likely come as no surprise that program also has the facilities for constrained geometric drafting.

FreeCAD will run on several operating systems, including Mac, Linux and Windows. It also supports scripting for its graphics generation, which means graphic elements can be created by creating code (in Python). It is also extensible, and users can choose to either download others’ plugins for the program or script their own extensions. Automation scripts are also doable. It also has a special simulator dedicated to robotic projects.

The application’s native file format is FCSTD. It is also compatible with many of the other standard file formats for both importing and exporting, including DXF, STEP and OBJ.
