What is Expression Encoder?
Microsoft Expression Encoder is a video editor and transcoder that was released by Microsoft in 2007 and discontinued in 2011. However, at the time it was discontinued, Microsoft also announced that the free edition would remain downloadable for interested users and that support services for the software would continue until September 2015 (later extended to September 2020.
The premium version was dubbed “Expression Encoder Pro” and the free version “Expression Encoder Express”, with the former bearing certain features unavailable to users of the latter. For example, it allowed users to encode in the H.264 format while the Express version did not. It also allowed users to perform 720p smooth streams of media through Microsoft’s Silverlight.
Both versions were incompatible with WMV video streams using versions of the format earlier than 9. The program could be integrated with software development kits such as Windows Media 11 and also supported caption creation for video projects. It could also encode input coming from video cameras live. Furthermore, batch processing was supported, as was cuts editing. Users were also able to import Expression Design overlays to it for advanced media enhancement.
