What is Esri CityEngine?

Esri CityEngine is an application used for creating urban content and 3D city models. These models are based on 2D and 3D feature attributes, data, procedural rules.

With Esri CityEngine, users can organize project files and data, access rules which will drive a 3D city model, and integrate CityEngine and ArcGIS for iterative and interactive geodesign workflow.

This software is available in two versions namely Esri CityEngine Advanced and Esri CityEngine Basic. The former is suited for professional users in CAD, 3D, and GIS production while the latter is for hobbyists, 3D artists, and freelancers.

Esri CityEngine Advanced is available with single use licensing which includes all of the capabilities of the CityEngine. At the same time it includes Python and import/export support which are advanced.

On the other hand, Esri CityEngine Basic is available with single use licensing only with limited import and export support.

Both, however, contain a customizable user interface wherein users are provided with full drop and drag support, freely arranged tabbed windows, and layout configurations support. In addition, both versions provide users with a toolset used to edit and design urban layouts with blocks, parcels, and streets.
